Mixed Medium Sculpture x Sound Art x Digital Projection

Phase 1

This piece is a mixed medium compilation. The initial phase of this compilation is composed of a sound art piece. For this project, I watched HOURS of CNN and other various news coverages of Trump (nearly losing my mind in the process) and gathered clips of the most outrageous and pertinent things he’s said/addressed in relation to immigration.

I then scoured the web for immigration journey stories.  Once I translated these stories from spanish to english, I mashed up all of the audio by both overlaying audio and cutting and pasting segments in strategic places.

Below is the resulting sound art.

Phase 2

Phase two was the first portion of the visual piece.  This ended up being a found mirror that I then painted on.   While the design on the mirror is simple, the idea bears weight.

The mirror is painted with 7 flat white bars, replicating the idea of imprisonment.  The idea behind this was to physically place onlookers behind bars so that they would be able to relate to the audio stories of imprisoned immigrants and essentially place themselves in their shoes.

Behind the bars are a handful of vivid monarch butterflies, which blatantly represent the idea of immigration and also freedom.  While I aimed to emphasize detention, i also wanted to include an element of freedom.

Phase 3

For the last element of this piece, I opted to include a projection mapping portion.  The projection is to be displayed on the 7 bars of the mirror. The images projected transition from metal bars to white picket fence posts.  The idea behind this is to symbolize the outcome of immigrants seeking asylum in the U.S (detention centers) versus the journey they originally envisioned (a new, safe home).

Together, all elements of the final piece create one ode to immigration.  In the end, I hope that this piece resonates with people and serves as a call for action.

Below is the transitional video to be projection mapped onto each of the 7 bars.
